It has been confirmed that Reddit founder and husband of Tennis legend Serena Williams, Alexis Ohanian has purchased a stake in Chelsea Women believed to be in the region of 8-10% for £20m. This puts a value on the Women’s Super League champions of £200m. On the investment, Chelsea Women chief executive Aki Mandhar said;
“This is a landmark day in the history of Chelsea Women and for women’s football in Europe and beyond. This investment is validation of the club’s past success but more importantly it is yet another proof point in the market of the persistent growth and potential of women’s football. There is no greater champion of investing in the future of girls and women’s sports than Alexis, and we are incredibly proud to welcome him to the club.”
Ohanian is no stranger to backing Women’s sport financially. He was the largest shareholder of NWSL side Angel City FC until it was sold for £192.3m in 2024.
Chelsea had put a post investment value on the club of £245m. Earlier this year, Chelsea FC Holdings (who own the men’s side) sold the women’s club to a sister company to enable it to adhere to profit and sustainability rules.
